Building High Maturity Enterprises by Designing Improvement Program to Deliver Value: A Systemic View Suyash Kumar Chopra Tata Consultancy Services Consultant
1. Enterprise as a System An enterprise is a system, consisting of several sub-systems in the form of various business functions. These sub-systems interact among themselves to meet the strategic goals of the enterprise. In an IT service provider enterprise, various industry solutions units (ISU) and IT projects operate to contribute to the overall strategic goals of the enterprise. 2. As-Is state Outcome of typical IT projects is measured relative to the capability of their processes and workforce. Projects are expected to develop and build products and services of superior quality, which is possible by the robust process frameworks. Highly motivated and skilled workforce is another requirement which ultimately determines the quality of IT products and services. Only then, value is delivered to the stakeholders of business, which consist of internal stakeholders like employees, leadership teams, and external stakeholders like clients and partners. 3. Challenges One of the strategic goals of the enterprise is to address the issues of complexity and uncertainty existing in the business and the environment. Large enterprises, with high maturity, inherently have a number of subsystems they interact with each other, causing inter-dependency and complexity.
