While cloud computing, with its utility computing and virtualisation approach, is slowly becoming mainstream, high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, software and services are being trialed in the cloud. Grid computing users have enjoyed utility computing for about two decades with the costs of international education and research networks, large-scale instruments such as synchrotrons and telescopes, and, HPC centres shared or nominally traded ('cycle swapping agreements'). HPC in the cloud however has a long way to go, as scientists face many obstacles in particular due to network bandwidth and memory limitations when attempting to migrate HPC software or services to the cloud.
