STILFOLD secures Pan-European patent

Swedish deep-tech company STILFOLD, known for its origami-inspired engineering, has been granted a pivotal European patent protecting a disruptive hardware configuration for advanced sheet metal forming. The patented mechanism enables controlled plastic deformation along curved, non-linear paths.
“ This marks a paradigm shift from traditional straight bending, unlocking the ability to create complex, high-performance 3D geometries from flat material in a single, tool-less, fixture-free sequence. By reducing part count, eliminating welding and tooling, and optimising stress distribution, our system offers a lowenergy, high-precision alternative for structural applications,” explained STILFOLD.
“ This patent secures the core mechanical innovation behind our process,” added Jonas Nyvang, CEO and co-founder.
“ It’ s a foundational enabler of programmable, robot-compatible metal forming with drastically lower environmental and economic footprint. The capacity to fold metal along non-straight paths unlocks entirely new design and manufacturing strategies,” he continued.
STILFOLD’ s technology suite, now expanded by this patent, positions the company for digital manufacturing in automotive, architecture, aerospace and industrial design— where strength-to-weight optimisation, circularity and on-demand flexibility are becoming industry imperatives.
STILRIDE is a Swedish technology and design company that develops products based on sustainable industrial origami- STILFOLD. STILFOLD is a patent-protected method for producing smart, light and durable constructions that can be folded from flat materials in a digital value chain. n

Partnership vision for fossil-free steel

SSAB and Metal Solutions have entered a long-term partnership for the supply of decarbonised steel“ with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions.”
“ This formal collaboration builds on a longstanding successful partnership with Metal Solutions and represents a shared vision for innovation, responsibility and sustainable transformation across the traditional metal roofing and cladding sector,” commented SSAB.
Metal Solutions is a UK supplier and fabricator of all traditional metal roofing materials, systems and components to the roofing and cladding industry. This strategic collaboration is expected to play a strong role in helping the roofing and cladding industry to reduce its environmental impact.
GreenCoat ® colour-coated steel from SSAB is reportedly among Metal Solution’ s most popular material choices for metal roofing and cladding. For Metal Solutions, this product formed the beginnings of a wider strategy, moving on through low-emission recycled steel and eventually on towards a fully fossil-free steel future.

“ Collaboration, sustainability and innovation are part of our core values, these values are not optional, they’ re essential. This partnership allows us to break difficult boundaries and grow stronger together, offering our customers materials that support a greener and more responsible future,” said John Flood, Director, Metal Solutions Ltd.
Traditional steel production represents a significant source of global CO₂ emissions, with both virgin and recycled steel production contributing to emissions. By changing the
way that steel is produced, SSAB wants to cut emissions and create a fossil-free value chain with customers and partners( regardless of whether the raw material is scrap or iron ore).
In 2021, SSAB produced its first“ fossilfree” steel as a proof of concept using HYBRIT ® technology.
“ The revolutionary steelmaking technology, using hydrogen-reduced sponge iron, removes the primary source of CO₂ emissions with water as by-product, instead of CO₂. Since then, several pilot deliveries have been made to customers in different industries. When available in commercial volumes, the fossil carbon emissions in our production of SSAB Fossil-free™ steel are targeted to be less than 0.05kg CO₂e / kg steel in Scope 1, 2 and for iron ore upstream Scope 3, of the GHG Protocol,” concluded SSAB. n
