Weld seam detection system
Finding a weld seam on tubes is becoming more and more important , especially during automated manufacturing processes and is ultimately of increasing importance for the quality of the final product . Optimising the welding processes does not make this complex challenge any easier . In the case of longitudinally welded tubes , for example , weld seams can be increasingly difficult or impossible to detect optically .
Roland Electronic GmbH has been successfully dealing with the issue of localising weld seams on tubes for many years . Its SND40 Weld Seam Detection System is a measurement system based on the leakage flux method ( magnetic flux ) or the eddy current method . It is characterised by a very high grade of flexibility . Depending on the material , welding process , wall thickness etc ., various options are possible for the measuring process and resulting program parameters .
Fig 2 : Simple menu navigation . the effort required to set up the system . Just enter the tube diameter , wall thickness , material type , information on post-treatment and the required target angle for the weld seam positioning ( Fig . 3 ),” it added .
These parameters are queried step by step . From this , suitable “ recipes ” are calculated , which are verified and optimised in a subsequent automated process . The database created by Roland Electronic has been continuously maintained over the years .

“ Our SND40 weld seam detection system therefore guarantees reliable detection , even of weld seams that are not visually recognizable . It ensures optimum and required weld seam position ( Fig . 4 ) for safe further processing of tubes and avoids process and product errors . It guarantees an increase in quality and productivity as well as sustainable protection of the customer ’ s resources ,” concluded Roland Electronic GmbH . n

“ An intuitive menu navigation feature ( Fig . 2 ) makes it possible to find the optimum parameters for localising weld seams on tubes , depending upon the product , without in-depth knowledge of the measuring device or the measuring method ,” explained the manufacturer . “ The wizard mode minimizes

Electric die changing cart
Above : The Roemheld RWA 4000 transport cart in use at Jean Müller , Eltville am Rhein , about to pick up a die from the new racking .
The RWA 4000 manoeuvrable , electricallydriven Roemheld die changing cart type is capable of carrying a load of up to four tonnes . It has a die changing table with integrated hydraulic ball bars and a pullpush system that facilitates automatic insertion of the dies on a press bed .
During transport , the hydraulic balls in the cart table are lowered and the die is prevented from slipping . A safety circuit ensures that the RWA 4000 only moves when the ball bars are retracted . Removable safety bars at the front and sides of the support surface additionally secure the die . The cart can be controlled
from a central panel on the drawbar , on which a multi-function display is mounted . Alternatively , employees can adjust the most important cart functions remotely via the radio control .
“ The pull-push system integrated into the cart allows a die to be safely pulled by its eyelets from a storage rack onto the table . When it arrives at the press , the die is pushed onto the bed . Both motions require no physical effort from the operator . The complete system includes two rack systems with eight die locations , especially developed to store frequently used dies close to the machine ,” added Roemheld . n
