These can range from a request for ( amazing amounts of ) free product to a request for ( completely inappropriate ) personal services to ... well , really , the sky ’ s the limit .
So , what do you do when a client , customer , patient , or partner pressures you to give something unreasonable ? You say “ No .”
Now of course , that ’ s easier said than done . It ’ s funny how those two humble letters combine into a message that ’ s very hard for some of us to deliver . Hard , but not impossible , when you realize that “ no ” is just another example of the most important thing you have to say .
The way you say this all-important word will depend on a lot on your conversational style .
• If you ’ re someone who likes a matter-of-fact , reality-based approach , you
“ We flood when our thoughts don ’ t have a central organizing principle ”
might say , “ I ’ m sorry , I just don ’ t have the budget for that .”
• If you ’ re more focused on inter-personal dynamics and maintaining harmony , your version of that statement might sound more like , “ I ’ m so sorry about this , and it ’ s killing me to not be able to accommodate you , but I just don ’ t have the budget for that .”
These are both completely valid approaches , and you ’ re better off sticking with the one that best reflects your natural style . Whether you use straightforward or more emotional language , remember that your main point is still “ no .”
And then , of course , you follow up by offering something that you can do for them instead of the unreasonable thing they asked for . This shows your sincere desire to accommodate them . And hopefully — because one can always hope — it helps educate them about the kinds of requests that are likely to get a yes .
