Atopic Dermatitis
Eczema , or eczematous dermatitis , is a broad category of skin conditions that are extremely pruritic and can form scaly macules , papules , vesicles , or patches . Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema , and the two terms are often used interchangeably . The exact cause of atopic dermatitis is unknown ; however , there may be an inherited component , as nearly 70 % of those affected have a family history of asthma , hay fever , or eczematous dermatitis , also known as the “ atopic triad .” It can affect people of all ages , but commonly manifests in infancy and continues throughout childhood . Some children will outgrow atopic dermatitis , while others will continue to have it as adults .
Atopic dermatitis can start with extremely itchy , dry skin and progress to a red , swollen rash . The itching often starts before the rash , and a rash will later appear as a result from scratching . Vesicles may form , and fluid can eventually leak from the rash . The rash can crust over and even start to scale . Lichenification , or thickening of the skin , and prominent skin lines can be seen in areas that have endured long-term scratching . Skin may look hyper- or hypopigmented from previous inflammation . Affected areas vary according to age but may include the flexural surfaces ( i . e ., elbow creases , behind the knees ), cheeks , upper eyelids , lips , neck , and hands . Although atopic dermatitis cannot be cured , it can be managed through diligent daily skin care and an appropriate care plan from a board-certified dermatologist .
