The Art of the Consultation | by Linda Pitt
Number 3 : Treatment Plan & Education
The initial consultation and assessment will have led you to selecting the best treatment options that address your patient ’ s concerns and lifestyle . You may want to provide more than one treatment option ; in fact , some patients are not inclined to go through a “ downtime ” period , or , if new to cosmetic procedures , may want to take things slow . Others may not mind “ downtime ” while some may not be good with consistent office visits . All of this factors into which would be the best and most appropriate treatment for your patient .
Always practice the highest ethical standards . First and foremost , be honest and don ’ t make false claims or recommend unsuitable treatments or products . This includes never making a treatment plan based solely around budget . This is something you can take into consideration or adjust if needed . It is not recommended to presume to know what a patient is willing to invest to achieve their desired results . Be flexible in your approach and adapt accordingly .
When presenting the treatment plan , educate your patient on the reasons for your choice and list the benefits and effectiveness of the treatment for this patient . If the patient is resistant to your recommendations , has unrealistic expectations , or the type of procedure they want is unsuitable , it is your responsibility to educate and thoroughly explain why the treatment they thought they wanted or the one their friend had may not be the best suited for them and their unique skin type . Be very tactful and give them suitable alternatives .

Each patient is different , and you will have to adapt the way you communicate to each one of them .
