Number 2 : Examination / Assessment & Analysis
It is important to do a thorough examination of the area to be treated , and following your consultation with the patient , there may be multiple areas and concerns .
Again , you can go over any relevant medical history , state of past and present physical and mental health , medication , contraindications , lifestyle , and any previous treatments or surgeries .
This is an opportunity to discuss and understand better their current skincare regimen and explain the importance of topicals . For instance , when treating someone with melasma , I take the time to give them a thorough explanation on what it is and what they can do to improve it . It is important that as part of the process , they understand that melasma is a chronic disorder and the use of topicals can help to not only improve their results but reduce the risks of reoccurrence .
You should make note of their skin condition , skin tone , texture , as well as establish their Fitzpatrick skin type ( I-VI ). Considering their full ethnic background prior to performing a treatment is essential , and there are several factors to consider when treating individuals with Fitzpatrick types IV through VI as the melanin in the epidermis absorbs more laser energy , increasing the risk of adverse events from epidermal injury in those with darkly pigmented skin .
Additionally , look at muscle tone , skin laxity , rhytids , and contours of the face while discussing and documenting your observations of any vascularity / redness , pigmentation / photodamage , open pores , and texture irregularities or scars . Confirm that the patient is aware of these and note any possible contraindications to any treatments .
For body treatments , you will need to examine and palpate the area to ultimately establish the type of fat and the fat distribution . As part of the initial assessment , you will need to look for any evidence of fluid retention , degree of muscle tone , and assess posture . As always , it is necessary to note any possible contraindications to the treatments looking to be performed .
