( DGA ), 45-65 % of the daily calorie intake should come from carbohydrates , while in a low carbohydrate diet , the consumption of carbohydrates is reduced to less than 45 % of the daily calorie intake ( 3 ). The amount of carbohydrate intake per day in a low carbohydrate diet is between 70 and 100 grams of carbohydrates , with a combined nutrient distribution of less than 30 % from carbohydrates , 50-60 % percent from fats , and 20-30 % from proteins ( 3 ).
While low carbohydrate and calorie-restrictive diets are similar in the fact that both reduce serum insulin levels , increase ketone production , and target the same signaling pathways , recent research suggests the benefits of carbohydrate restriction over calorie restriction may be more effective at preserving muscle mass , decreasing inflammatory markers , and increasing longevity in older individuals .
The incidence of cellular dysfunction increases with age , contributing to morbidities including cardiovascular disease , diabetes , vascular compromise , arthritis , and hypertension , to name a few . Benefit assessments reveal that a low carbohydrate diet has the potential to decrease inflammatory markers , enhance insulin sensitivity , and trigger mitochondrial biogenesis , which is described as a process by which lifeforms produce other lifeforms , among many other beneficial mechanisms that support the aging body . It is crucial to first clarify how carbohydrates affect the metabolic processes and to offer an overview of “ simple ” versus “ complex ” carbohydrates and their effect on the pancreas and insulin production .
