Why So Sensitive ? | by Dr . Alpesh Desai
• Aim for products formulated for sensitive skin and free of sulfates , dyes , alcohol , exfoliants , and other harsh or abrasive agents that may cause irritation . Common irritants in skincare products that can cause reactions in some individuals include alpha-hydroxy acids ( AHA ), retinol , hyaluronic acid , benzoyl peroxide , and salicylic acid .

With the exception of the Prodigy Peel Systems , iS Clinical products containing Vitamin A or its derivatives are not systemically absorbed and are safe during pregnancy .

• There are thousands of fragrances and preservatives in skincare products that have the potential to cause adverse skin reactions . Caution is still advised with “ unscented ” products , as these may contain fragrance agents to neutralize the smell of the other ingredients . Products labeled “ fragrance-free ” will be free of irritants .
• Water-containing products can contain preservatives like parabens , imidazolidinyl urea , Quaternium-15 , DMDM hydantoin , phenoxyethanol , methylchloroisothiazolinone , and formaldehyde , all of which have the potential to cause skin allergies .
• Always spot test new products . Use the product on a small area of the arm for a few days . If no reaction occurs , then apply the product to the cheek or forehead . If no adverse reaction occurs , then the product can be integrated into the skincare regimen .
What are practical day-to-day tips for sensitive , allergy-prone skin ?
• Do not overdo it ! Avoid overly aggressive washing or washing too frequently .
• Choose gentle cleansers that are rich and hydrating . These cleansers help maintain the moisture barrier of the skin . Abrasive , exfoliative cleansers can damage and strip the outer layers of the skin .
• Avoid using hot water . Use cool or lukewarm water to avoid damaging the protective lipid barrier of the skin .
• Ingredients like Vitamin B5 and Vitamin C can help brighten and hydrate the skin .
