Aestheticians :

The First-Line Detectors of

Malignant Skin Lesions

Skin cancer continues to be the most common type of cancer in the United States .

by Dr . Alpesh Desai

Skin cancer continues to be the most common type of cancer in the United States . At least one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70 . More people are diagnosed with skin cancer annually than all other cancers combined , and nearly 10,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer daily . Aestheticians have the privilege of working closely and often regularly with a client ’ s skin and , therefore , are in the best position to detect possible warning signs of skin malignancies . During a treatment session , an unusual growth may be noted , or the client may mention a stubborn or changing spot that “ just won ’ t go away or “ doesn ’ t look right .” This can help initiate an important conversation that could be lifesaving for the client .

Recognizing the characteristics of common malignant and pre-malignant lesions can help guide aestheticians as to when to advise clients to seek further evaluation .
