Awesome Alumni
A native of Iredell County, Brady Johnson
has spent his entire career in the IredellStatesville School system. Mr. Johnson is a
product of the Iredell-Statesville Schools, having
graduated from South Iredell High School in
1972. He obtained his AA degree from Mitchell
College in 1974 and went on to graduate from
Appalachian State University in 1976 with a
BS in Social Studies with teacher certification
– grades 6 through 12. He also holds a Master
of Arts in Educational Leadership from GardnerWebb University. Mr. Johnson has worked as a
teacher, assistant principal, principal and deputy
superintendent.
In 2009, Mr. Johnson was appointed
Superintendent for Iredell-Statesville Schools.
Since that time he has continued to lead the
district through its most challenging fiscal crisis
to date. He serves (and has served) on boards
throughout the county, including Boys and
Girls Club, United Way, Good News Club and
Crosby Scholars. There is no one who is more
of a presence in this county than Brady as he
possesses a magical clock that allows him to be
everywhere he is most needed at any time of the
day or night.
As Superintendent, he arguably runs the
biggest business in the county, with the most
stakeholders. His business acumen extends
to the largest restaurant chain (Child Nutrition
Department) serving more than 14,000 meals
a day - to public transportation (210 school
buses whose daily travels culminate in 2,496,987
miles per year) - to physical plant (maintaining
4,086,000 square feet, spread over 40 sites,
whose building ages run from 1942 to present).
He is a combination of Mahatma Gandhi
and Henry Kissinger – making peace and working
through a myriad of crises every day. Drive by
549 N. Race Street at 9:00 p.m. and you will
likely see him at his desk, returning phone calls.
Saturday? Sunday? He’s there..,or at an art
show, a concert, sporting event or meeting with
parents. Students and public education remain
his passion as he credits every success in his life
to the institution.
Brady Johnson
Perhaps the legacy he will leave, in
addition to the people whose lives he has
touched, will be the creation of Crosby Scholars.
This college access program would not be
available to our students today without Brady’s
diligence and unrelenting determination to get it
up and going.
While his family will always come first, the
staff and students of Iredell-Statesville Schools
always know that they run a close “second”. An
honest and genuine leader, Brady Johnson truly
is an Awesome Alumni.
