Girl Scouts Gold Award Project
After thirteen years in Girl Scouts , one might think that Bethany White would have grown weary of projects and service . As a senior at Crossroads Early College ( on campus at Statesville High School ) and thinking about her Gold Award , Bethany really wanted to do something that focused on teeth . “ I want to study dental hygiene ,” the senior said . “ It seemed natural to want to do my Gold Award around something that interested me and I wanted to pursue as a career .” So , how did she arrive at rehabilitating an elementary school auditorium ? “ I just couldn ’ t figure out how to incorporate teeth into an award , so my very next thought was this auditorium .”
There is a family connection to N . B . Mills . Wayne White , Bethany ’ s dad , attended N . B . Mills in his first and second grade years and works there now custodian . Knowing the condition of the auditorium and understanding it was not being utilized as much as it could be , Bethany decided this was the perfect project for her to help give these students some of the opportunities she had as a child . “ I want the students at this school to have the best memories of their lives coming from this building and this school .”
The project Bethany has chosen involves removal of the old auditorium chairs , purchasing of 300 new ones , new carpet and adding painted murals to the walls . The paintings will cover areas on the walls where windows were cut many years ago and subsequently covered . “ The members of my troop already did one of the murals ” Bethany reported . “ They are all excited to be a part of this room which will serve students for many years .” Community members will be donating their time and talents to do the remaining murals . With a goal of $ 12,000.00 to accomplish what she set out to do , Bethany is still wondering where the balance of the funds will come from . “ I ’ m writing grants and asking everyone I know ” she said . “ If anyone donates $ 100.00 or more , we are making a plaque for the building that will list the names of these donors . It ’ s the least we can do to say thank you .”
