Crosby Career
Camp
The Iredell County Crosby Scholars Community Partnership programs growing, and they are trying new
things! This summer, Crosby Scholars teamed up with Mitchell Community College and generous Iredell
County companies. They provided a free summer career camp for some Crosby Scholar students.
The world of work is elusive to many students. How can you pick a career or major when you still have
so many questions about the world of work? The Crosby Scholars program is trying to bridge the gap with
a little help from their friends. High school is the perfect time for students, not to search for answers, but to
figure out what questions they need to ask of themselves and of others as they prepare for the next step.
Crosby’s Career Camp 2017 gave students an intimate look at careers available in Iredell County in the
areas of healthcare, manufacturing, food and computers. Students seem to have gotten more than they
bargained for. Some students only wanted to look at one area, but were surprised to learn about other
possibilities. Mitchell Community College partnered with Crosby Scholars so students were able to get a
classroom perspective of each career area and talk with faculty about expectations, areas of growth and
what it means to study in the field. Each morning presented an opportunity to do hands-on activities in a lab
or classroom, coupled with tons of great advice for students preparing for college.
