Carla Shedd ’ s book , Unequal City : Race , Schools and Perceptions of Injustice ( Russell Sage Foundation , 2015 ), won the C . Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems in Pursuit of Social Justice and the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship book award from the American Sociological Association section on race , gender and class .
His first book , Spirit in the Dark : A Religious History of Racial Aesthetics ( Oxford University Press , 2016 ), Josef Sorrett illumines how religion has figured in debates about black art and culture across the 20th century . Josef ' s second book - tentatively titled The Holy Holy Black : The Ironies of an African American Secular - is also in contract with Oxford UP . Additionally , Josef is editing an anthology , The Sexual Politics of Black Churches .
Rising on the National Mall next to the Washington Monument , the National Museum of African American History and Culture is a tiered bronze beacon inviting everyone to learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience and how it helped shape this nation . Mabel Wilson ’ s book , Begin with the Past : Building the National Museum of African American History and Culture ( Smithsonian Books 2016 ) is the story of how this unparalleled museum found its place in the nation ’ s collective memory and on its public commons .
