IIRAAS alumna Javiela Evangelista recently completed her PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center and is now an Assistant Professor with the African American Studies Department at New York City College of Technology , CUNY .

IRAAS Summer Teachers and Scholars Institute ( STSI ) alumna Kyesha Jennings was recently interviewed by Clarion Content about her work as a professor in English Literature and Composition using Hip-Hop as a tool in her teaching . Please click here to read the interview . In September , Jennings also spoke at panel on hip-hop in academia as part of the Beats & Bars Festival in Durham , North Carolina .

STSI alumna Suhaly Bautista-Carolina co-organized a group exhibition at Denny Gallery ’ s summer popup location , called Present Futures | Present Futures : Strategies Toward Emancipation ( Part One ). Her AfroLatinX photography portrait series was featured in Es Mi Cultura publication , Issue 11 . She was also awarded the 2016 Willow Books Weeksville Summer Arts Fellow / scholarship . Recently , Bautista-Carolina became the Director of Programs at Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute and Community Relations Manager at Brooklyn Museum .

In the fall of 2016 , STSI alumnus Godfrey Vincent spoke on a panel entitled Black Power Movement In Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean as part a one day symposium observing the fiftieth anniversary of the Black Power Movement entitled " A Fifty Year Retrospective : The Black Power Movement and Its Impact ." The Symposium was held at The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University .

STSI alumna Shirley Jackson was recently nominated and awarded the Doris Wilkinson Faculty Leadership Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems .
