Investigating the impacts of ocean acidification in the Southern Ocean - Antarctic Cruise | Page 60

A Narrow Escape Eric Achterberg, January 26, 2013
Today was a very pleasant day for some of us, but others endured very frightening times. In our dreams we are often chased by smelly monsters with massive jaws and spiky yellow teeth. The dreams end by being swallowed up and then waking up whilst sweating and screaming.
After arriving at King Edward Point on South Georgia this morning, the scientists were all very excited and keen to disembark the vessel for a day off from sampling and sample analyses. The long days and hard work over the last fortnight had taken its toll, and some relaxation was appreciated. The snow was falling heavily and the island looked beautiful in the midst of austral summer. On the itinerary of many was a walk to the lake on the hill, a visit to the museum and two post offices, and a stroll through the abandoned Grytviken whaling station. We were all warmly dressed with good footwear, and we set off from the ship with a good pace, very happy to stretch the legs. The first post office was reached without any problems and many stamps, post cards and t-shirts were purchased. Then things changed, the route to the other destinations was along a path bordered by frightening monsters.
