As we entered the ice the sea calmed which is quite predictable , and the sun came out which is definitely not predictable . This gave us fabulous views of Elephant Island , and its friends Cormwallis and Clarence Islands . These are the northernmost fragments of Antarctica and impressively rugged pieces of mountain scenery with several glaciers . The Cape Petrels , however , seemed to think this was a bit far south , and they flew excitedly round and round the ship then more or less disappeared , although they were replaced by a reasonable number of rather elegant Southern Fulmars .
