Investigating the impacts of ocean acidification in the Southern Ocean - Antarctic Cruise | Page 22

As we entered the ice the sea calmed which is quite predictable, and the sun came out which is definitely not predictable. This gave us fabulous views of Elephant Island, and its friends Cormwallis and Clarence Islands. These are the northernmost fragments of Antarctica and impressively rugged pieces of mountain scenery with several glaciers. The Cape Petrels, however, seemed to think this was a bit far south, and they flew excitedly round and round the ship then more or less disappeared, although they were replaced by a reasonable number of rather elegant Southern Fulmars.
