v Whaling Crews
Whaling Vessels carried boats, and the number of boats determined the crew size. If the whale vessel carried only two boats, the crew was made of 13 or 14 people. If the vessel carried more boats, the crew size corresponded.
Whalers were paid depending on their job. For instance, captains received 1 / 12 of the value of the materials that the vessel brought in. The unskilled crew hand( the cook, etc.) received 1 / 175, and cabin boys as little as 1 / 3500. The other members were paid according to experience and position.
