NEOBIOTA Group
NEOBIOTA, the European Group on Biological Invasions, is a network of experts dedicated to understanding and tackling the challenges posed by invasive alien species. Founded in 1999 in Berlin, it brings together scientists, environmental managers and other experts to advance invasion research and develop effective strategies to mitigate the impact of introduced species on biodiversity, ecosystem services and human health.
NEOBIOTA hosts an international conference every two years – the NEOBIOTA Conference Series. The 2024 edition was wonderfully organized by the MARE – Marine and Environmental Research Centre, in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the University of Évora, with Pedro Anastácio, Paula Chainho and Filipe Ribeiro as convenors. Looking ahead, NEOBIOTA 2026 will be held in Belgium – stay tuned for more details!
For the last 10 years, Montserrat Vilà was the president of the NEOBIOTA group. In 2024, she decided to leave space for new voices. Since then, Franz Essl (former vice President) is the President and Belinda Gallardo the vice President of the group. Ana Novoa is the Secretary of the NEOBIOTA group since 2022.
