Keeping Kosher?

Kosher is the formal name for Jewish laws containing what foods can and can not be eaten, along with how the foods must be prepared and eaten. You may also hear it as Kashrut. (1) Many people confuse Kosher with a style of cooking, but that is not the case! Keeping Kosher requires very proper examination and dedication. For example, certain animals may not be consumed, including the organs, flesh, milk, and eggs of the forbidden animals. Not all parts of the animals that are permitted are allowed to be eaten. (1)

Traditional Meals

Who's hungry? Now that we have talked about the laws behind the food , let's talk about actual permitted food. One of the main dishes eaten by Jews is Challah. Challah is special Jewish bread eaten on holidays and Shabbat. Made with honey, eggs, and other ingredients, Challah serves a significant purpose in the lives of the Jews. The loaf is usually braided representing the intertwining of arms and love being shared. However on Rosh Hashanah, (Tracey R. Rich 1) the festive bread is usually served round representing the circle of life. On special occasions, there is a prayer said over two loafs of the sweet delicious bread. (1)
