HOW TO BEHAVE IN THE WORKPLACE ( WORKPLACE ETIQUETTE )

If this is your first experience of the workplace , there are several things to bear in mind – the world of work is different to University , but after a while you will soon settle in and feel comfortable . Bear in mind that companies will differ in their policies so be aware of this and be ready to adapt as required . If you have thought about these areas and asked questions it will lessen your anxiety and your supervisor will be impressed that you are so conscientious .
DRESS CODE Check what the accepted dress code is – is it smart / smart casual / uniform / protective clothing ? You will feel much more comfortable turning up on your first day dressed appropriately . If any doubt at all it would be best to wear smart clothing . Dress codes are often used in the workplace and there are many reasons why an employer may have one , for example workers may be asked to wear a uniform to communicate a corporate image and ensure that customers can easily identify them or a law firm may ask for a suit to project professionalism . Often an employer will introduce a dress code for health and safety reasons , for example certain clothing may not be allowed in laboratories whilst using scientific equipment and hospital based employees may not be allowed to wear jewellery when around patients .
PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS Make sure that all your communications are professional and suitable for the workplace – this includes verbal and written forms . If you are communicating with the company ’ s clients for example , you should make sure that you use appropriate language and style / format . As regards emails , the basic rule is don ’ t say anything in an e-mail that you wouldn ’ t want to see posted on a bulletin board . E-mails cannot be considered confidential , and they can be easily forwarded . See also Social Media section .
TIMEKEEPING Most employers expect their workers ( unpaid or paid ) to adhere to the working hours that they set . If you are not sure what these are , ASK .
PERSONAL PHONE CALLS If you need to make any personal phone calls during work time , ask your supervisor what the policy is , or what they consider to be acceptable . Always ask first , it is best not to assume .
SOCIAL MEDIA Make sure that you do not spend time checking your social media whilst at work . Outside of the work place , make sure that you have checked your social media privacy settings or that you would be happy with your employer seeing what you say if you are easy to find .
ARRANGEMENTS FOR LUNCH Hopefully this will be explained to you during your induction , but don ’ t be afraid to ask what people usually do for lunch and what is acceptable including if there is a set time for a lunch break . Also check what the policy is regarding eating at work ; it would not be acceptable to chew gum for example , as it does not portray a professional image .
SICKNESS REPORTING If you are unable to go to work due to sickness , ensure that you let the company know as soon in the day as possible . The company should inform you during your induction what the sickness reporting policy is – again , if you are not sure just ask .
