RESIST THE URGE TO USE
THE TERM “INTERNSHIP”
LOOSELY. A VACATION JOB
IS NOT AN INTERNSHIP.
WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW AND CAN DO
Resist the urge to use the term
“internship” loosely. A vacation job
is not an internship.
What you already know and can do
INTERNSHIP VS.
EMPLOYMENT
Resist the urge to use the term “internship”
loosely. A vacation job is not an internship.
An internship is part of your education process – your learning and development
through the practicalities of work and at work is a key feature and emphasis. As
such, the experience is for your benefit and the employer derives no immediate
advantage from what you do during the internship. As an intern, you do not displace
regular employees but work under close supervision of existing staff.
On the other hand, employment requires you to contribute to the work with what
you already know and can do. When you are an employee, your performance is the
focus and the experience is for the benefit of the employer.
