HKIed Organic Farm:
A Piece of Dreamland
Are you interested in the environment? Have you even
thought of growing your own crops? Tsz Kit explains
the benefits of organic farming.
HKIEd Organic Farm (IOF) is a newly established organization which first
started in April 2015. It is located between Block D3 and D4 podium, right next
to the biology laboratory. If you plan to visit then you will be able to find two
pieces of farmland - two areas for growing flowers, a fish pond and also some
machinery demonstrating hydroponics and aquaponics which aim to be more
environmentally-friendly. You can also find various organisms in the farm fish, butterflies, moths, insects, birds and even amphibians.
IEd Market opens regularly selling the farm produce which is grown there.
Herbs such as Basil or Mint can often be found and are very popular. Other
than the growing of crops, the farm also aims to provide environmental
education and support other organizations in the environmental sector. This
focus on biodiversity conservation aims to increase the ecological value of
HKIEd.
Additionally, two food waste treatment facilities are used to help with the
decomposition of those organics into inorganic matter. They can act as
fertilizers to help support the growth of plants.
The dead leaves composting box can also convert dead leaves or branches
into compost naturally at the same time. These facilities serve educational
purposes in demonstrating nutrient cycling.
If you love farming and nature then why not join in? You will be able to try the
crops yourself which is all part of the fun.
The next IEd market will take place
at the end of January in Central
Plaza. It will be a great chance to
meet passionate student farmers.
Don’t miss it!
