THE ART OF PAPER FOLDING
BY KATHERINE XIE
Taught by Marcus Bennevall
I am glad to have had the opportunity to participate in this
workshop so that I could experience the fun of origami!
Under Marcus’ guidance, we learned to fold small boats and paper
cranes. We also learned that there are two different cultures of
origami, Chinese and Japanese. After a historical introduction,
I learned that origami originated in China, and when it came to
Japan, it became part of the culture there. Interestingly, we also
learned a way to fold things like maps so that they are easy to take
away. By folding many times, we could turn large pieces of paper
into small pieces, which we then can put in our pockets and use
very conveniently. Lastly, my friends and I folded a decorative ball
together. I think it was a very nice experience.
I think paper folding is a very attractive art to build people’s hands-
on skills and patience. The workshop raised my interest in origami
and made me want to try it again.
