New for this year , SMS is developing a portable field-testing unit , specifically designed to perform quality checks on SMS Connectors and corresponding cables . This unit is designed to perform continuity , hi-pot , Megger and other common tests to ensure equipment is operating at peak performance . It is being designed to withstand the harsh conditions of mining . There will be a functioning prototype of this fieldtesting unit at the company ’ s MINExpo booth .
KonNx Incorporated , established in 2008 , is an original equipment manufacturer ( OEM ) of high and low voltage cable coupler solutions available in a variety of voltage ratings .
Key features of these couplers include genderless designs to eliminate the use of conventional male and female connections , all air expelled on joining and full phase to phase segregation with earth .
KonNx and its international sister companies are always looking to solve industry problems with the development of new products and accessories , or redesigns of existing ones . Its LED Live Line Indicator is an example of this .
The original iteration of the Live Line Indicator was developed as a battery-free fail-safe system that enabled easy identification of live high voltage couplers . “ Intended for use in underground operational sites , the design of this indicator utilised neon bulb technology : something that was quite revolutionary at the time ,” it said .
However , with the growing number of metalliferous and other open-air operational sites around the world , the decision was made in 2018 for the Live Line Indicator to undergo redevelopment to make it brighter than ever before , with two clear goals in mind . One goal was to increase operator awareness and safety underground ; the other being to enable the indicator ’ s use in the bright daylight of open-air operational sites , offering those sites and their staff access to the same level of risk awareness and safety .
Two years was spent on research and development , with , in 2020 , the release of the new LED Live Line Indicator occurring . “ Through the use of modern LED technology significantly increasing brightness , the added
safety benefits of a live high voltage indicator were made available for all above ground operational sites , while also increasing visibility for underground sites ,” the company says . “ Utilising as few electrical components as possible and remaining battery-free to prevent hazardous false positives , the team managed to achieve each goal and the desired overall result , while also boosting the lifespan of the LED Live Line Indicator to a massive 50,000 hours .”
The LED Live Line Indicator will be on display at KonNx ’ s booth alongside couplers from its high voltage range .
