Caribbean Focus:
Barbados is an island in the Eastern Caribbean Sea and located about 1,600
miles south of Florida. This former British colony gained its independence from
the UK on November 30, 1966 but remains part of the British Commonwealth.
The population of just over 280,000 is primarily of African descent with about 10% being white, Asian, Middle Eastern, mixed and Amerindian. The island is listed on the African Heritage Diaspora Trail (ADHT), a program endorsed
by the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the primary goal to establish
heritage links between the Diaspora traditions in Africa, the Caribbean, North America, Canada, Latin America and
Europe.
