Global Responsibility: (Re)imagining Memory Communities and Narratives
Moderator: Paweł Sawicki, Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, Poland
Dr. Piotr M. A. Cywiński is a medievalist and the director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. He is also a cofounder and the president of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation and a member of the International Auschwitz Council (its secretary in the years 2000-2006). He serves in numerous bodies dedicated to memory, such as the council of the Pilecki Family House Museum, the Maximilian-Kolbe-Stiftung or the board of the Maison d’Izieu Association in France. He serves as the chairman of the KL Plaszow Museum Council in Krakow. In the years 1996-2000, he held
the post of the deputy president and in the years 2000-2010 that of the president of the Warsaw Club of Catholic Intelligentsia. Cywiński is the author of numerous historical articles and texts, with particular focus on the Middle Ages as well as the Holocaust and memorial sites.
Dr. Daniel Bekele, an Ethiopian lawyer and human rights activist, was formerly the Chief Commissioner of Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (2019-2024), and prior to that, he served as the executive director for Africa at Human Rights Watch and as Senior Advisor for Amnesty International. Bekele worked on the promotion and protection of human rights, peace, justice, and support for civil society across Africa. His experience spans public service, the private sector, academia, and international agencies.
Prof. Dr. Johanna Mannergren is a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Södertörn University, Sweden. She has an expertise in peace processes and writes about transitional justice, memory, reconciliation, and gender. The co‑authored monograph Peace and the Politics of Memory came out in 2024, and her work has been published in international journals, such as International Journal of Transitional Justice, Memory Studies and Political
Psychology. In addition to her academic work, Mannergren is a board member of the international organisation Kvinna till Kvinna that promotes women’s rights in conflict-affected societies.
