ABOUT DR FRANKIE

I’m Dr Frankie Jackson-Spence, graduated from University of Birmingham in 2018 with a first class honours degree in Medicine & Surgery. Now working in London as an NHS junior doctor.

My interests are in lifestyle medicine and preventing disease occurring through good nutrition and regular exercise, rather than just prescribing a pill once disease is established. I like to bust the health myths floating round on social media and back up my advice with evidence based facts to make sure the public are appropriately informed. I myself like to keep fit by doing F45 workouts because I enjoy the social aspect as a way to relieve stress from my work life. Professionally, I have an interest in cancer research and will soon be hoping to train to become an Oncologist.

COVID19

WORKING THE FRONT LINE

BY DR JACKSON - SPENCE

What is COVID19?

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the novel strain of the infectious Coronavirus, first detected in 2019. In many people it can cause mild flu-like illness but ranges to a severe acute respiratory syndrome in some cases called SARS-CoV-2, which can be life threatening.

What are the main symptoms?

The most common symptoms are persistent, dry cough and/or fever and the government guidance is to self-isolate for 7 days if you experience either or both symptoms.

However, as we learn more about the illness we have seen other symptoms emerge such as anosmia (loss of sense of smell), headache, extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing/shortness of breath and even diarrhoea!

An important point to emphasise is that some people can have the virus, but not show any symptoms at all! That means they could be spreading the virus when they go for their essential shop or exercise outdoors. Therefore, everyone is encouraged to adhere strictly to the social distancing guidance as you could be an asymptomatic carrier.
