NEW TECHNOLOGY CAN GENERATE BIOFUEL WITH ALGAE
Scientists of the Bio Architecture Lab (BAL), a laboratory specializing in research on biofuels in the United States, have developed a new technology that can apply seaweed to create renewable fuels and chemicals.
According to the study published in the journal Science, the engineering team was able to develop enzymes capable of extracting sugars found in algae and converting them into a profitable source of energy and biomass.
This makes seaweed an economical raw material for the production of renewable fuel as well as chemicals," says the company's CEO.
According to the publication, they have no environmental impact. The study says that at least 3% of coastal waters can produce algae capable of replacing 60 billion gallons of fossil fuels.
Already there are cases in the world of commercial production of these algae, as in four algae farms in Chile, with a high rate of economically viable production.
