He put together a half-dozen Christian songs, one after another, and went to Nashville to hire a singer and band and get the songs recorded. Causey had always been a singer by ear. He didn’t play any instruments, and didn’t know how to write music, so translating his ideas to the singer seemed impossible. Eventually he started trying to sing the songs himself to show the singer what he wanted, and — gradually, almost accidentally — came back to singing for himself. “It was painful. My throat hurt to sing, but I did another one the next night, and each time got a little better, until I’d finished an album,” said Causey. “I told the doctor what I was doing and he said, ‘You gotta be kidding, man.’” The resulting album, “Well Done My Son,” is a jazzy, bluesy affair, loaded with Christian theme
