RACE SCHEDULE The Sunny King Criterium’s schedule may look intimidating, but it’s actually easy to follow the flow of the day if you know just a few things: Races are ranked by Category, or “Cat” levels. Category 5 racers are considered to be beginner races on the pro race circuit (they’re usually excellent riders and above average in ability, but haven’t had time or experience move them up the ranks). The races start with Cat 5 and junior riders and work their way up the ranks, also featuring “Masters,” racers age 35 and up, also ranking from Cat 5 to Cat 1, in their own races. As the evening goes on, races will start to approach Cat 1, where the best of the best take to the road and compete for huge cash prizes. The women’s professional race at the end of the night will see first place take $7,500 and the victor of the men’s professional race will take home a cool $15,000. Make sure to plan your evening accordingly and don’t be shy about finding a place on the track — the corners are where you might see power plays in progress, and the rush of cyclists firing by on the straightaways is amazing.
