27 STUDENTS ACHIEVE A * A LEVEL GRADES AT HAZELWICK SCHOOL
Hazelwick School in Crawley, a state-funded academy school, has seen its highest ever A level grades achieved in this year’ s results. Nearly one in four of all A2 grades were A * or A( 24 %); nearly half of all A2 grades were between A * and B( 48 %); and 77 % of A2 grades were A *-C.
In addition, 20 students achieved three or more straight A */ A grades and, in a best ever for the school, 27 students gained at least one highly demanding A * grade. Ann Fearon, head at the school, said: " Hazelwick is delighted to have maintained its strong position in academic subjects at A level with another set of excellent results. Five of our top-achieving students have gained places at Oxford or Cambridge University and four have been accepted for medicine at other Russell Group universities.”
" We are immensely proud of all our students ' performances,” added Ann.“ This excellent year group showed great engagement and commitment throughout their time at Hazelwick and they fully deserve their success."
Hazelwick student, Amy Cooper, 18, had the surprise of her life when she opened her envelope.“ I had checked my results online and could see that I had had my university offer confirmed, but that was conditional on getting one A * and two As, so that’ s what I thought I had got,” said Amy.“ But, three A * s! I just wasn’ t expecting it.”
“ If it wasn’ t for Hazelwick School and the teachers there, I wouldn’ t have achieved this,” she added.“ They helped me with mock interviews and essays, and really prepared me for the university application process. I’ d especially like to thank Latin teacher, Mr Hopkins – as a Cambridge graduate he gave me valuable advice and was especially generous with his time.”

“ This apprenticeship has given me so much more than just a qualification, it has been the key to opening many new opportunities and challenges,” said Terry.“ I work with a talented team with so much experience in different dishes, styles and methods. I put my uses to whatever they want me to do, from preparing veg to helping out with plates at service. My aspiration is to be the best I can be by learning as much as I can and to help others learn on the way; one day I’ d like to be a head chef.”
“ Terry has been an absolute star since he joined,” said Paul Wright, general manager at The Old Ship Hotel.“ The dedication and commitment he has shown to completing his course and the passion he has shown for our business has ensured a smooth transition into the world of work.
It’ s been a pleasure working alongside Terry and I will absolutely be supporting his development going forwards.”
Terry has graduated with a Level 2 NVQ in Professional Cookery, following 12 months of training delivered by Lifetime Training. To recognise this achievement, six apprentices were invited to Billesley Manor near Stratford-upon-Avon to take part in a special evening dinner where each apprentice literally brought something to the table. The different skills being showcased included chef skills, waiter skills and bar skills.
“ The six young people who produced the food and presented it to their colleagues and families at this event have demonstrated exactly what apprenticeships mean today,” added Peter Manby, managing director, The Hotel Collection.“ They have the skills, the knowledge and the dedication to succeed in the great hospitality industry.”
