Back to Nature
Whether it's the promise of the first blooms of spring,
the reawakening from our winter stay-in-doors
hibernations, or our reinvigorated sense of eco-
responsibility - or more likely a combination of all
three - there is no denying that nature will play a
huge part in our homes and indeed our bedrooms
this year.
From the sustainable wood being used in Willow &
Hall’s (www.willowandhall.co.uk) sofa beds and bed
frames to a rise in natural materials such as cork and
rattan, as demonstrated by British brand Loaf’s
launch of the Willow collection - not only does the
wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside table bring
much needed storage but also a retro vibe full of
texture - more of us will be opting for wood finishes,
natural textures and nature-inspired hues, furnishings
and finishing touches.
As Sarah Cricton owner of Neptune Canterbury
explains: “This Spring we’re adding as much natural

Rose, £120; Eloise Ottoman - Imogen Holkham Sand, £610; Hadleigh Throw – Ink, £235; Keats Conical Pendant Light

texture and life into our bedrooms as possible. From
single green sprigs and small succulents, right through
to entire trees planted in rustic baskets, we’re bringing
the outside in and creating a truly calming haven.”
We are also going back to nature with our bedding
too, with a growing bedroom army opting for high
thread count cottons and organic materials for
blankets and throws; whilst abandoning man-made
fillings for the natural options of wool, feather and
down. Made to Last, (www.made-to-last.co.uk) the
sustainable British furniture brand, has seen a real
shift towards duvets and toppers with natural fillings,
even though they typically cost more than their man-
made fibre options. Whilst Neptune Canterbury has
expanded its bedlinen collection to include easy
going linen alongside its more crisp Albertine
Egyptian cotton bedding. Sarah adds: “You can
layer up even further – critical in an unpredictable
English springtime! – with sheepskins and luxurious
merino throws.”
The nature theme continues into the shades of the
season too. In a nod to climate crisis, the global
vegan movement and the shift to eco being the new
chic, luxury bed specialist and Tunbridge Wells-
based, And So To Bed predicts that alongside
recycled, sustainable and bio-based waste materials,
colours will be nature-inspired too. Expect to see
earthy retro tones with browns in shades of coffee,
tumeric and pecan as well as yellow hues with
“mustard tones and warming nectars set to brighten
up even then coolest of interiors.” Whilst Willow &
Hall have introduced corduroy and crushed velvet
fabric collections to meet the growing demand for
the 70s-led demand for texture and orange and rust
tones. This is echoed by Kellie Oliver, head of buying
at Harvey’s Furniture, (www.harveysfurniture.co.uk),
who adds: “Greens and mustards will continue to
be the colour drivers in 2020, whilst the velvet trend
will also continue into the new year... Luxury fabrics,
such as wool, will continue to be added into the mix
of upholstery and soft furnishings.”
