THE MEREWORTH KITCHEN PROJECT BY THE WEALD KITCHEN COMPANY

The Weald Kitchen Company was founded in 2022 by two brothers, Tom and Chris, with a passion for creating heartwarming, bespoke kitchens. Based in Maidstone and covering Kent and East Sussex, the team brought their collaborative approach to this project in Mereworth. Working closely with the homeowners from design through to installation, they transformed the space from a house into a welcoming home.

Can you tell us about this bespoke project and what made it unique? We were approached by the clients to undertake a challenging kitchen project within their beautiful 500-year-old cottage in Mereworth. Having previously spoken to other kitchen companies, they were looking for a team who could work sympathetically with the character and irregularities of the property while still delivering a practical, contemporary kitchen.
The space presented a number of challenges, including old, uneven walls, exposed ceiling beams and uprights, alongside varying ceiling heights. However, rather than trying to disguise these features, we wanted to embrace them and fulfil the client’ s desire by blending the contemporary with the historic characteristics, designing the kitchen around the existing structure of the cottage.
What was the design brief for this project? The aim was to create a kitchen that retained a strong traditional feel but with carefully considered modern touches. We wanted the finished space to feel as though it belonged naturally within the 500-year-old cottage, while providing all the functionality and luxuries expected from a modern kitchen.
Bespoke elements were particularly important to the design. These included a solid butchers-block end, a bespoke surround for the American-style fridge freezer and full-height cladding behind the hob. Miele appliances were incorporated in the design to provide high-performance functionality without compromising the overall aesthetic of the kitchen.
How did you overcome the challenges of space? Working within an old property always brings its own character and challenges.
