What can go wrong ? If injections are carried out by cowboy practitioners , or in layman ’ s terms , people who don ’ t know what they ’ re doing and so shouldn ’ t be doing it , they can inject the substance into the wrong area , which , on a good day means the injections will have no effect at all , but , on a bad day , especially when injected around the frown lines , can cause droopy eyelids which can droop for months . The risks of bleeding , infection , lumpiness , allergic reaction , prolonged swelling and bruising are also possible , as is uneven facial paralysis ; hardly the desired results and thankfully not very common IF you do your homework .
What to watch out for :
• Price : This is the biggest giveaway . Botox usually costs between £ 200 - £ 250 per area . Filler is also around £ 200 per area . If it ’ s really cheap , corners are being cut somewhere .
• Premises : Would you have an important vaccination done in your kitchen ? Tweakments are no different ; you should be in a professional medical setting – not someone ’ s front room or kitchen .

• Qualifications : Find out who your practitioner is by checking with the GMC or Nursing & Midwifery Council . Then Google them . Do some digging .
• Promotions :. Be wary of them . Rogue practitioners promote on social media and often use discount voucher websites . Again , knowledge is power , so research is key .
• Consent : Reputable practitioners will ask you to sign a consent form .
• Medical history : Your practitioner should ask you some questions regarding your medical history , e . g . medication , allergies and lifestyle , to ascertain what ’ s suitable for you .
Some handy dos and don ’ ts ...
DO :
Always ask questions . Are they ’ re insured ? What happens if something goes wrong ? What happens if you ’ re unhappy ? Is there a warranty period ?
Your research . Into both the clinic you choose and the medical practitioner to ensure they ’ re qualified for what they are offering . People of colour should check if their practitioner has experience of working with their skin colours and types where relevant , too .
Consider face value . What does your practitioner look like ? This may sound a tad harsh , and we ’ re very much to each their own where appearance is concerned , but if you think they ’ ve had ‘ too much ’ work ( or indeed not enough ), is it the result you ’ re looking for ?
Manage potential pain . If it ’ s being offered , it ’ s being offered for a reason , so accept the numbing cream - it ’ s very likely worth the extra waiting time .
DON ’ T :
Pre-empt pain . Avoid taking painkillers before an appointment without checking with the clinic . Some procedures won ’ t be allowed if you have due to potential blood-thinning .
Make assumptions . Not everything is reversible . Filler dissolving , for example , is complicated and often painful , and Botox is impossible to undo .
If you don ’ t like the results , you ’ ll might be stuck with them for months or more , so ask all the questions !
Make rash decisions . Many practitioners will encourage newbies to wait two weeks following an initial consultation . Be wary of those that greet you at the door with an eager grin and a full syringe . All this said , as UK legislation becomes stricter for those practicing in aesthetic injectables , it ’ s never been a better ( and safer ) time to consider a semi-permanent tweakment , or two , so if you fancy it , go for it – there is no shame in wanting to turn back the clock a little , keep future wrinkles at bay , or treat your face to a moisture boost .
