complementing the location while adhering to the local architectural style .
How did you begin the design process for West Meadow ? The design process for this project started during lockdown , marked by extensive conversations between the us and client to really cement an understanding of their vision . A crucial aspect of the design was to fully engage with the surrounding views , making them an integral part of the living experience . We knew we wanted to give the home a distinctive narrative and to create a unique identity whilst complementing the local vernacular within St Margaret ’ s Bay .
What was your design timeframe ? The design and planning approval process took around six to eight months . During this time , we engaged closely with the planning authorities to secure the necessary permissions to build under Paragraph 80 . To gain approval in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty , the building needed to exhibit not only a high level of architectural merit , but also quality and sustainability . It was important to work closely with the planners to recognise the importance and sensitivity of the location .
Were there any building factors you needed to consider ? And if so , how did you achieve your design objectives while factoring these in ? The site presented unique challenges given its location and its proximity to a Grade II listed building , Wallets Court . The objective was to secure planning permission in accordance with Paragraph 80 regulations . Designing to meet these guidelines offered an intriguing challenge and led to the decision to create a low , single-story building . West Meadow almost lies unknown in the landscape from the distance because of this .
Were there any project pitfalls ? The initial impression from a planning perspective was that the outdoor bathroom may appear perhaps as an unnecessary extravagance . However , when considering the implementation of an air source heat pump , rainwater collection system and PV panels , this aspect of the project demonstrates its practicality and sustainable integration while being cost effective .
How did you find the balance between an excellent design-led build that also kept to budget ? Working closely with the client to gauge an understanding of their priorities was crucial to sticking to budget while maintaining the high standard of architecture . One unique design solution to achieving a quality finish while remaining within budget was the ambitious roof form . Initially , the roof may appear highly intricate , seemingly curving from its apex to an almost entirely flat structure . However , the construction is relatively straightforward . The roof takes the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid , transitioning from a 45-degree pitch at its highest point to just five degrees at its flattest section . Each part of the roof is inherently straight , with the illusion of curvature created by the shifting angles between these sections .
Did you offer any interior styling solutions / advice for the home ? The success of the interior should be credited to the client and TG Designer Homes ( tgdesignerhomes . com ). One unique feature of the interior is the bespoke oak cabinetry , with concealed storage , that forms along the entire flint wall . These , alongside the cork wall aids which are used for sound absorption , helped to create a warmer finish within which the client wanted to contrast the hard concrete floor and flint wall .
What were the common mistakes that you managed to avoid ? As a practice we always consider design and sustainability as an integrated and cohesive concept , rather than sustainability being an afterthought . Because of this ethos we were able to incorporate solutions that achieved the high architectural finish while satisfying environmental goals . For example , the hyperbolic paraboloid roof not only presents an impressive aesthetic , but the overhang also functionally serves as a passive solar shade for
the southern facade . This strategically enhances thermal comfort within , thus reducing the house ’ s overall energy consumption . Moreover , the flat roof over the carport discreetly conceals the solar panels from view , adding to the overall functionality and aesthetics of the design .
Did the property require any bespoke elements ? All the interior cabinetries were bespoke to the project and beautifully handcrafted by 3Planks Joinery ( threeplanks . co . uk ). Alongside this and the paraboloid roof , the study was also an important bespoke feature . Echoing the form of a saddle hut , the cognitive study punctures through the flint wall and is connected by a glazed corridor , blurring the boundary between the interior of the home and the natural surroundings .
What are you most proud of ? As a studio , pride lies in the successful creative collaboration among the client , planners , and us . It is this collaboration to which the success of the project can be attributed . We have two studios in Kent , each equipped with an understanding of local planning and architectural vernacular . This local presence also enabled frequent site visits and in-person meetings , facilitating effective communication and coordination . Our constant endeavour is to foster a collaborative and creative relationship between us , our clients , and the planners . This emphasis on collaboration is particularly crucial for projects situated in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty , where we are faced with a balance between designing architecture that stands out yet seamlessly fits in its context .
What are your hints and tips for those looking to embark on a property renovation project ? To ensure that you really understand the site , appreciate all the constraints , and engage with the entire process from inception to completion .
