One hundred trees have been planted in 2022 , 30 oak trees to mark the club ’ s anniversary and 70 trees as part of the Queen ’ s Green Canopy , a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty ’ s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 . The 70 trees include rowan , beech , willow and ash .
2022 is a big year for celebration as the current owners of Hever Castle , the Guthrie family are also marking 20 years of ownership of the golf club but there has been a golf course on the estate for around 100 years .
A private nine-hole course was built for former owner William Waldorf Astor ’ s personal enjoyment in the grounds where today ’ s Championship Course lies north of the Hever lakes . Hever Golf Course proved a valuable tool for the Astor ’ s to entertain friends , family , and for business .
From the 1920s until the outbreak of the Second World War , John Jacob Astor V and his wife Violet hosted days out at Hever Castle for The Times newspaper staff . The day out was a big event , often attracting over 3,000 guests .
The original course survived until the Second World War when it was sadly abandoned during the war effort . However , the present-day Championship Course was created in 1992 and the Princes Nine- Hole Course opened in 1998 .
Head greenkeeper Rob Peers who planted the trees said : “ To contribute something positive to the environment whilst acknowledging some very poignant occasions felt like the right thing to do .
“ It seemed only natural to bring the celebrations of these two anniversaries together to further enhance the estate ’ s commitment to long term environmental sustainability .”
Rob and his team have also been creating bat boxes with three so far made from oak .
The idea behind the bat boxes is to naturally reduce the number of crane flies which otherwise infest the greens . Bats can eat up to 3,500 insects a night .
