MEET THE GARDENER

SAM CURTIN

Pearson ’ s Landscapes

Where did your interest in gardening begin ?
I have always preferred being outdoors to indoors so it was natural that I would choose a job that gave me plenty of opportunity to spend time in nature . Landscaping and gardening seemed an obvious choice , which over time has developed into a passion .
Why did you want to be a gardener ?
I love the sense of achievement after completely redesigning and reinventing a previously unloved or forgotten outside space . It never gets old . Our customers are regularly blown away by the complete transformations of their gardens – especially with our focus on the environment and not only on aesthetics .
Where did you study ?
I completed the Hadlow College Level 3 Landscaping Diploma , which is not only about landscaping but also includes interesting and important business aspects such as managing resources effectively , customer relations , horticulture , and team building .
Who is your inspiration ?
I enjoy watching the Rich Brothers on BBC One ’ s Garden Rescue , tackling garden redesigns for deserving viewers . I find their ideas original and practical and easy to apply in my work too .
How long have you worked here ?
I have been with Pearson ’ s Landscapes for eight years .
What appealed to you about working here ?
The Pearson ’ s Landscapes team is a tight knit team , with our projects organised to play to everyone ’ s strengths . I feel that it is really important to find satisfaction in what you do , and I am pleased to say that I truly enjoy what I do every day with the Pearson ’ s Landscapes team . From project design to implementation , no two projects are ever the same , which keeps every day interesting – and very busy !
What is your favourite type of garden to design / install ?
We are lucky to have customers with very large properties , which have their own challenges in terms of garden design and overall management . I do love a challenge , so getting on top of these various outside spaces can be hard work but is also incredibly rewarding .
What ’ s your least favourite part of garden design / installation ?
Unpredictable weather does make my job harder at times ! Obviously working in warm sunshine is the best , but that is certainly not all year round , and torrential rain in freezing conditions can test everyone ’ s patience when you are working outside to a deadline – no matter how much you love nature . That said , I ’ d still rather be outdoors than indoors sitting at a desk .
