HOME + GARDEN
MEET THE GARDENER CONT .
What are the biggest considerations when planning a garden / landscaping design ?
What I have learned over the years is that it is crucial to thrash out exactly what the customer aspirations are regarding their garden design and installation , and then to manage these expectations accordingly . It is better to take a little more time in the beginning to gain clarity , rather than doing remedial work along the way and ultimately creating extra work for all concerned . Many people want an instant garden but are shocked at the cost of buying the more mature plants to create the finished garden there and then . Patience will save you money !
Describe your typical day ?
None of my days are ever the same . This is one of the things I love about working outside – it is never boring . My days generally start quite early with a 7am start at the office to get the teams ready for the day . Then it is either off to existing projects or visiting potential customers for quotes and initial discussions . Activities can range from sitting on a ride-on lawnmower for a whole day to wheelbarrowing 40 tonnes of topsoil through a narrow side gate to level 150 sq m of garden . You can imagine which one of those activities I prefer …
What ’ s your biggest achievement as a gardener ?
I can ’ t pick only one as every completed project really gives the whole team such a thrill and a sense of pride with the exciting transformations achieved .
Do you have a favourite plant / tree ?
My favourite plants are climbers , such as clematis and jasmine . I enjoy training them to follow the path I have set out for them . This is incredibly satisfying work to see them grow and bloom in exactly the way I have imagined .
What ’ s the one plant / tree everyone should have in their garden ?
I find it really important to include as many flowering plants in your garden design as possible , to attract the most bees and other wildlife . In today ’ s built-up world it is so important that we provide them with as much habitat as possible – and who does not want flowering plants in their garden ?
What ’ s your favourite season in the garden ?
Spring is amazing because it really feels like everything is beginning to flourish and seems to be changing every minute – you can almost see the plants growing ! It is a season full of expectation for the summer , which is always exciting .
