Inside OneTSU MAGAZINE Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholars Named KNUBIAN GATLIN JARED ARTMORE Texas Southern University was the Tom Joyner Foundation’s School of the Month for June 2014. Radio personality Tom Joyner leads this effort to help keep students in historically black colleges and universities. For four weeks in June a male student, who is a campus leader, and who is making a difference in the quality of life for his community with at least a 3.5 GPA receives a $1,500 scholarship grant announced live on the nationally DERRICK SMALLWOOD KEILON ROBINSON, JR. syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. Texas Southern University Hercules Scholarship recipients were: Knubian Gatlin, a sophomore Dietetics major from Spring, TX; Jared Artmore, a sophomore Pre-Pharmacy major from Beaumont, TX; Derrick Smallwood, a sophomore Finance major from DeSoto, TX; and Keilon Robinson, Jr., a sophomore double major in Chemistry and Mathematics from Houston, TX. Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation Awards Ja’tez Gardner A $10,000 Scholarship Ja’Tez Gardner, a Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MMIS) graduate student, attended a scholarship luncheon hosted by the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation November 5, where he was awarded a $10,000 scholarship. Gardner is the first MMIS student to have been selected for this award from the JHJ School. In addition to being a full-time student Gardner is an entrepreneur and has started his own business. Communications Student Accepted into Acting Conservatory Sierra Randolph-Williams, a Radio, Television and Film major and Theatre minor, has been accepted into the prestigious Stella Adler Conservatory in Los Angeles. She was among 800 actors who auditioned in Chicago at the United Residential Theatre Association. Stella Adler is a two-year professional acting conservatory. The Conservatory is a 20 hour per week program that prepares the student for creative challenges in the acting profession. Randolph-Williams was also recruited by the New School in New York. Randolph-Williams was coached for the auditions by Dr. Dianne Jemison Pollard, professor of Theatre. Two TSU Students Named to the White House HBCU All-Stars List Texas Southern University students Jarrauri Curry and Candace Jones were named to the first class of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (WHIHBCU) HBCU All-Stars list. Curry and Jones were recognized for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and civic engagement. Texas Southern University Music Department Recognized in Atlanta Representatives from the TSU music department displayed Tiger Pride in Atlanta at the 10th anniversary convention of the Historical Black Colleges and Universities National Band Directors Consortium. Receiving recognition were: Darius Davis on the French horn; Calisia Dillard, alto saxophone; Miguel Garcia, flute; and Kevin D. Lee on percussion, made the top concert group. Al Alexander on trumpet, earned a spot in the jazz ensemble. Garcia and Davis were also honored with the “first chair first” position in the top concert group for flute and French horn, respectively.
