Dr. Gloria Batiste-Roberts
Named NABSW “Educator
of the Year”
COSET Receives Major Award
The Department of
Homeland Security has
announced that its 2014
Scientific Leadership Award
goes to Texas Southern
University (TSU) College
of Science, Engineering and
Technology. This competitive
award goes to accredited
Minority Serving Institutions
(MSIs) to build Homeland
Security Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics
(HS-STEM) initiatives. This
grant will be used to establish
related curricula and courses
of study by supporting the
development of early-career
faculty, and recruiting and
mentoring students.
The title of the TSU
proposal is, “Technically
Savvy Homeland Security
Professionals for Maritime
Transportation Security.” The
Principal Investigator (PI) of
the grant is Dr. Yi Qi, assistant
professor of Transportation
Studies. Co-PIs include Dr.
Miao Pan, associate professor
Computer Science and Dr.
Yunjiao Wang, assistant
professor of Mathematics.
This is a five year grant with a
total funding of $800,000. At
current stage, the funding for
Phase I (FYs 2015 and 2016)
in the amount of $300,000 was
approved and the funding for
Phase 2 will be subject to the
satisfactory progress of Phase I.
According to Dr. Lei Yu,
Dean of TSU’s College of
Science and Technology, “This
grant will foster and broaden
the university’s existing B.S.
level program in Maritime
Transportation Management
and Security, and enhance the
interdisciplinary collaborations
between different departments
in the College of Science and
Technology (COSET).”

Year award from
the National
Association
of Black Social Workers
(NABSW). Dr. BatisteRoberts received the award
at NABSW’s 46th national
conference for her decades of
professional service to NABSW,
her students and her clients.
NABSW National President,
Joe Benton said the Executive
Committee of the organization
enthusiastically selected Dr.
Batiste-Roberts because of
her commitment to advancing
student development through
mentorship, scholarship and
tireless service.

Appointed to National
Committee
Houston Louis Stokes Alliance Program Funded
for $750,000 with Potential of $3.75 Million
The National Science Foundation (NSF) named the Houston
Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (H-LSAMP)
project as a Senior Alliance for the 2014-2015 academic years.
With this award, the H-LSAMP, now in its fourth five-year
funding period, is one of the longest-running LSAMP programs
in the nation. The project has been awarded approximately
$750,000 for this year, with the potential to receive up to $3.75
million over the next five years.
H-LSAMP was assembled under the leadership of Dr. Bobby
Wilson, an L. Lloyd Woods Distinguished Professor of Chemistry
and Shell Oil Endowed Chaired Professor of Environmental
Toxicology, with support from TSU President Dr. John M.
Rudley. Wilson serves as a professor in the Department of
Chemistry at Texas Southern University.
The Department of
Administration of Justice
Assistant Professor, Dr.
Sharlette A. Kellum-Gilbert
has been appointed as a
member to the Major Field
Test (MFT) Criminal Justice
Committee. The MFT in
Criminal
Justice is an
outcome
assessment
test that
colleges and
universities
administer
to measure student academic
achievement in criminal
justice before graduation.
The committee consists of
six professors from various
colleges and universities across
the country.
