specifically for this purpose and, with
a hefty EU grant, this aim was achieved.
The main exhibits in the museum
must be the complex itself and an
explanation outlining the work
involved in the renovation is displayed in the vaulted ground floor
of the living quarters, where a
scale model describes the function
of each building. The two floors
above house a limited number
of exhibits and commentary
on traditional Mani life - all very
tastefully presented. The view to
the ancient acropolis inland and
down to the coast from the steps
leading to the main tower, are
exceptional. At the time of going
to print there was no entrance fee.
I
fancy a
swim?
f you are a moderately strong
swimmer, it takes about 20 minutes
going at a leisurely pace to swim out
from the harbour to the island,
Meropi. There is a ladder to get in
the crystal clear water at the harbour
and once at the island, there are a
couple of inlets to get out and have
a rest. Walking up to the church
is a bit tricky barefoot, especially
since the path up subsided. It is not
so easy to get out on the other side
of the island. The swim back
is more interesting as you get a
different perspective on Kardamyli
and the mountains behind. The sea is
generally calmer in the morning.
