WORLD CUP - VENRAY, HOLLAND
Raceway Venray in eastern Holland, close
to the German border has always been a
favourite destination for UK race fans eager
to travel abroad for a weekend away (or in
some cases a family holiday) including a
couple of days watching our favourite sport
of stock car racing. In recent years, the
racing at Venray has been under threat due
to political and environmental issues which even saw the old track dug up and
relocated just a few hundred yards to the
other side of the access road. However,
track owner Harry Maessen never lost faith
in his oval racing vision and invested
heavily in constructing an even better
brand new facility. The new facility,
however, still faced problems with local
opposition but Harry has worked with the
community and the local government to
redress these issues and find a lasting
solution. So for the last couple of years,
the World Cup weekend was often in doubt
until the last minute, which meant that for
many of the travelling fans, organising a
trip was financially unviable.
With the main problems redressed,
Raceway Venray was able to confirm its
race schedule well in advance this year,
and with a date firmly on the calendar, the
travelling fans were able to make
