F1 World Final - FROM THE
by Paul Hines
I had the pleasure in taking part in one of the most
talked about World Final races in history! Skegness held
their first World Final back in September and although
people predicted a destructive race, I don’t think anyone
(even the eventual winner himself) would have predicted
what was about to unfold.
Skegness had decorated the circuit and was ready for
the big day. Premier Sports were filming and Richard
Kaleta was interviewing for the meetings DVD. If there
are two people who can talk about F1 stock cars it’s me
and Richard. Can you imagine the length of this
interview? It's a good job the camera man ran out of film
or else we'd still be there now.
Onto the race, I thoroughly enjoyed my parade lap but
was thinking, It would be great for drivers to come out to
a chosen piece of music. The music could be chosen by
the drivers or maybe the fans could choose something
appropriate their favourite driver. I put this theory to a
few fans during the day and I have to say there were
some funny suggestions. What about 'Bad to the bone'
for Mick Sworder. 'You're so vain' for Paul Harrison and
'When I'm 64' for Derek Fairhurst!
I was gridded inside row seven with some big hitters
around me. I enjoyed the potential challenge from a Rob
Speak into the 'first bend' and I have to say the adrenalin
was really flowing before the race. As I’m not a fighting
man, I can imagine my feelings were akin to that of a
boxer or cage fighter before a battle. It was a case of
would attack be the best form of defence?
In front of me were Ryan Harrison and Stuart Smith. It’s
probably a good job I was gridded where I was to help
'keep the peace' in the middle of the grid. Imagine if
Bobby Burns or Kevin Smith had been where I was back
in the day. That would have been one hell of a push from
rows 5 and 7!
As the green flag dropped carnage ensued. I was
determined not to let Rob Speak in front of me in the
first bend. If you are going to win a world final from a
row seven start then you have to make positions on the
