Warton Raceway Warton raceway is nestled away on the West Coast of England, a mere stone throw from beautiful Morecambe Bay. It’s enjoyed almost 40 years of competitive short oval racing, so this year they decided to push the boat out and celebrate. Warton have decided to combine the Queens Jubilee and Warton’s 40th year Celebrations and as always the drivers have responded by painting their cars, vans and caravans to commemorate this milestone in history. Later in the year Warton will have their second Van Banger event. Following on from their first success with over 25 vans turning up, the course clerk may have to decide if he should run 2 heats and a final... not a bad situation when you consider the economic climate. The raceway has changed beyond recognition over the years from a very rough dirttrack to a super-fast 260 metre asphalt cauldron of action and with it the formula has evolved into five main classes. There are Bangers and Super Bangers, Minis and Super Minis, and Warton’s very own special Outlaw Stockcars. On page 12 in this magazine you will find an article on Warton’s F2 Evolution. Warton’s season starts early in the year usually on Easter 8 0844 840 8104 Sunday with track Championships taking place mid September. All drivers qualify either by way of meetings attended or points scored. They always run on alternate Sundays with racing getting underway at noon. Warton prides itself on being family friendly and there’s access to all areas including the pits. An excellent viewing area has been set aside so you can enjoy the sport from the comfort of your car. With an array of vendors from ice cream to fish and chips, Warton make sure your day is one to remember. What can you expect to see this season? One of the craziest spectacles you are likely to see on a short oval track is the Caravan Race later in the year. This usually attracts around 20 vehicles on track all at once. Another Van-Banger Race and the usual domestic classes now attract around 100 cars per meeting. There’s plenty of action, so why not come and take a look? It’s easy to find - just off the M6 Motorway junction 35. Visit: www.wartononline.com for directions all the way to the track. A piece of advice the track is right on the coast just a stone throw from the sea - so if it's warm bring sun screen, if it's cold and wet get wrapped up. 40 Phots by: John Marlow www.johnmarlow.net Celebrating Years 1972 -2012
