Gibraltar Shares 25 Year Environmental Plan with UK Minister for Nature Gibraltar’ s Environment Minister, Professor John Cortes, met with the UK Minister for Nature, Mary Creagh, in London this week for a wide ranging discussion on environmental policy and international climate developments. The meeting followed Creagh’ s recent attendance at COP30 in Brazil, providing an opportunity for both ministers to reflect on global progress and the role of smaller jurisdictions in tackling climate and biodiversity challenges. During the discussion, Cortes presented Creagh with an advance copy of Gibraltar’ s forthcoming 25 Year Environmental Plan, which is expected to be officially launched shortly. Creagh welcomed the initiative and recognised the value of Gibraltar’ s long term approach to environmental sustainability. The two ministers also exchanged views on the Overseas Territories Biodiversity Strategy, a project due for release in the coming days. Minister Cortes has played a key role in shaping the strategy through his position as Chair of the Environment Ministers’ Council of the UK Overseas Territories. Other topics included sustainable fishing practices, such as the management of tuna stocks, as well as everyday environmental measures that Gibraltar promotes to encourage responsible behaviour, including requirements for dog walkers to carry cleaning materials. Cortes described the meeting as friendly and productive, noting the long standing professional relationship between the two ministers. Minister Cortes was joined by Gibraltar’ s UK Representative Jonathan Scott and Nadia Murphy from the Department of the Environment. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation on environmental protection, climate action and biodiversity conservation. |
Gibraltar comparte su plan medioambiental a 25 años con la ministra británica de Naturaleza El ministro de Medio Ambiente de Gibraltar, el profesor John Cortes, se reunió esta semana en Londres con la ministra británica de Naturaleza, Mary Creagh, para mantener un amplio debate sobre política medioambiental y la evolución internacional en materia de clima. La reunión se produjo tras la reciente asistencia de Creagh a la COP30 en Brasil, lo que brindó a ambos ministros la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre los avances mundiales y el papel de las jurisdicciones más pequeñas a la hora de abordar los retos climáticos y de biodiversidad.
