ClimACT Schools Gibraltar Awards Celebrate a Year of Environmental Leadership School representatives, education officials and government ministers gathered at Notre Dame Lower Primary School on Wednesday 10th December to mark the fourth ClimACT Schools Gibraltar Awards, celebrating a year of environmental leadership across Gibraltar’ s schools. The 2025 awards recognised the wide range of sustainability initiatives delivered during the 2024 – 25 academic year, highlighting continued efforts to embed environmental awareness and climate education into everyday school life. Sixteen schools participated, including all government mainstream schools, as well as Prior Park School and Hebrew Primary School. Certificates were presented at Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond levels, reflecting credits earned through diverse projects, policies and eco-initiatives. These included recycled zen zones, second-hand uniform shops, upcycled art projects, expanded outdoor learning opportunities, school gardens, insect hotels and car-sharing initiatives. Collectively, these projects support sustainability while encouraging creativity, collaboration and real-world engagement among pupils. ClimACT Schools Gibraltar began over eight years ago as part of the EU-funded SUDOE programme and continues to grow under the leadership of the Department of Education, with ongoing collaboration from the Department of the Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change and local NGOs. Reflecting on the achievements, Minister John Cortes praised schools for leading by example in environmental and climate awareness, commending the dedication of staff and the enthusiasm of students in delivering practical projects that improve the environment and promote long-term sustainable habits.
