A Forest for Memory: The Arboretum 100 Félix Begins
The Arboretum 100 Félix project has begun with the planting of an oak tree in the Aiguamolls de l’ Empordà Natural Park, in Girona. This first symbolic act marks the launch of an initiative conceived as a tribute to the centenary of the birth of Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, to be commemorated in 2028.
The event featured the participation of French conservationist Jean François Terrasse, a long-time collaborator of the naturalist, who at 91 years old joined the planting alongside prominent environmental figures such as Jordi Sargatal and Joan Mayol. Beyond its commemorative nature, the action signals the start of a project with national scope.
The initiative aims to distribute one hundred different species of native trees across one hundred protected natural areas throughout Spain. This dispersed arboretum, conceived as a living network, will make it possible to view the project as a whole and will serve as a tool to promote knowledge, respect, and the conservation of biodiversity.

Driven by the nature magazine « El Cárabo » and supported through institutional collaboration, the project has been in preparation since 2024, when the saplings that will shape it began to be cultivated. Each tree will be cared for by the participating entities, becoming a long-term educational and environmental resource. The project will culminate in March 2028, when commemorative plaques will be placed next to each of the planted trees. This first oak, now rooted in the landscape of Empordà, marks the beginning of a collective effort aimed at engaging society in celebrating the legacy of one of the most influential figures in environmental communication in Spain.
