Activities for the observance of Guyana’s 44th Republic Anniversary continued with the hosting of a literary fair held in the Main Street Avenue between Church and Quamina Streets. On display were hundreds of books of varying topics, storytelling and readings.

The event was coordinated jointly by the University of Guyana Library, the National Library, Book Foundation, Book Land (Georgetown Reading), the National Archives and the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD).

The fair is being held under the theme “Reconnecting People to Books” and this year’s Mash theme “Cultural Folklore: Celebrating 44.”

In his remarks, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony noted that based on huge turn-out to the fair it should be promoted and made a feature of the annual Mashramani celebrations. He explained that this is in an effort to keep the reading tradition alive.

“It’s not only about reading…I’m quite sure how many people in Guyana are aware that we have a great publishing tradition and a lot of people feel that not a lot has been done on publishing in Guyana but when you walk through the booths you get a fair sense of what is happening in terms of publishing,” the Minister said.

He emphasized the fact that the Ministry is pleased that it is maintaining the tradition of literary criticism and going in depth in discussing aspects of Guyanese literature especially since some of Guyana’s neighbours have not been able to do the same.

The Minister noted that the library at the University of Guyana also has a good collection that is not fully utilized as such bringing out part of the collection to a mass audience makes people more aware of what is available and where they can be located. Additionally, the National Library has a fantastic collection and the need now is for more people to use the institution more.

“The whole thrust of this exercise is to get more people involved in the area of literature particularly in getting young people to read more,” Minister Anthony said.

The street fair has been commended by many as it provided, and still provides, a pathway for readers and revitalizes the love for reading. Unfortunately there was a pause in the fair and it is hoped that the current fair will bridge the two year gap.

Prior to the opening ceremony, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony and the Director of Culture, Dr. James Rose perused the booths.
